A Play about Child Soldiers and Child Labour

A Play about Child Soldiers and Child Labour
What started as an Art Competition ended up being a play!

Thursday, February 14, 2008

It all started when Miss Diskin told us about an Art Competition based on

The Convention of the Rights of the Child.

First we had to decide which right to focus on. We voted and finally decided on the Right not to be used as a soldier in wars and The Right not to be used as cheap workers.

For homework that night we had to come up with ideas. The following day we split up into little groups to brainstorm. One group came up with the idea of a film and the class decided it was a good idea. Some people wrote scripts and we finally chose one.

4 of us were chosen as directors and we carried out auditions. Costume directors were also appointed. We started work on the costumes. This was fun but you would want to see our Principal’s face one day when he walked in on The Mess we had made.

When we had decided on our film locations we started "filming". The film follows 4 children, Jai, Lelia, Mia and Abdul. The boys work on a dump while the girls work as cheap labour sewing sports gear in a factory. Later an army comes, the factory closes down with the connivance of the boss and the children became soldiers in war.

The film represents what life is like for children all over the world in these situations. We chose these Rights because we feel they are ones that are so often abused and where the Convention on the Rights of the Child is ignored. The film was very hard to make but we really enjoyed it.
