‘The Right Start’ to Building Friendship
A pupil models some of the friendship bracelets

The boys at Star of the Sea are taking part in Friendship Day on the 29th February. The school councillors are organising the day for the rest of the school. The boys from the school council with some other pupils from their classes will play cooperative games with the younger classes and talk about friendship with them. One such game is the hoop game. The class stands in a circle holding hands. A hoop is placed on the arm of one person and must be passed around the circle without anyone letting go of each other’s hands. The aim of the game is to work together to get the hoop around the circle.
Since it is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights this year the older classes will be discussing what human rights mean to us. The junior classes will be discussing fair play and getting along together. One great activity to promote friendship is the “friendship wall” from The Right Start book. Each person writes his or her name on a piece of card and passes it around the class. Everyone writes something positive about that person and then the cards are stuck together to make a wall.
Of course the friendship bracelets will be on sale too. Our school councillors will remind everyone to bring in their €2.00 for the friendship bracelets made by Guatamemalan street children. Funds raised will go towards Amnesty International who work to protect our human rights.
