LIFT OFF showcased as an example of combating racism in Durban Review Conference
Thursday, April 23, 2009
LIFT OFF was showcased by the United Nations as an example of combating racism through human rights education. LIFT OFF is an example of how human rights education can encourage attitudes of respect, mutual understanding and equality both within the school community as well as within the wider local and global contexts.
The importance of human rights education as a tool to combat discrimination has been highlighted in both the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action of 2001 and the outcome document of the Durban review conference in Geneva.
The side event “Combating racism through human rights education: Examples of national practice” was organised by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) with the United Nations Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee for Human Rights Education in the School System (UNIACC) and the Council of Europe.
Avril Hall Callaghan, General Secretary of the Ulster Teachers' Union, addressed a committee session at the Conference to explain the principles behind Lift Off.
